GESTATIONAL DIABETES – (diabetes during pregnancy)
Diabetes is a disorder in which the body does not produce the required quantity of insulin which keeps the sugar in the blood normal. If proper treatment of diabetes is not done, high levels of sugar can accumulate in the blood and damage organs, including blood vessels, eyes and kidneys. Preexisting diabetes (diabetes before pregnancy) and Gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy) are the two types and is crucial to control blood sugar levels to reduce risks to the pregnent woman and her fetus. Generally in gestational diabetes do not have an increased risk of having a baby with birth defects. However, proper care and proper medicines without any side effects should be administered. Poorly controlled gestational diabetes slightly increases the risk of still-birth. Women of poorly controlled diabetes are at the risk of having baby with over weight. This is called Macrosomia. These babies grow very large since some of the excess sugar in the mother’s blood crosses the placenta and goes in to the fetus. The fetus produces extra insulin and store it as fat. Babies in such conditions areat the risk of breathinf difficulties, low blood sugar levels and jaundice. The only way is to control blood sugar levels during pregnancy.
